Educational Program
Peter Rabbit provides a play-based emergent program where through observation; an appropriate program can be developed for individuals and the group as a whole based on developmental needs and interests of each child.
The pre-school provides children with opportunities for open-ended learning where they are encouraged to explore and experiment with materials, to solve problems and work out issues for themselves. We have activities with multimedia, such as paint, sand, paper, crayons, water, dough, etc, to enhance the children’s development of fine motor skills, creativity and self expression. To stimulate their imagination and develop language skills we have story time, drama, poetry, music and movement.
We encourage curiosity and creativity and build on the connections the children make between what they know already and encourage self discovery and an active approach to new learning. One of the ways we achieve this is through our wondering wall. Wondering wall is a place where parents can write questions their children ask and these are discussed at group time. This gives children a chance to deliberate on the question. The rest of the group has a chance to also help answer the question and with the gengle guidance of the teacher the group can come to an answer.
We help the children develop relationships with their peers, though group play, and promote their sense of well-being, self worth and respect for diversity by providing a positive, caring and accepting environment.
The children are provided daily with opportunities for active play and exercise to enhance their physical development and gross motor skills.
Throughout the year we document the children’s interactions, conversations, individual interests and project work in each child’s portfolio as a record of their learning journey.
School readiness program
Peter Rabbit also provides learning experiences specifically designed to prepare children for a smooth transition to school. Some of our school readiness activities include pre-reading activities such as letter and sound recognition, mathematical understanding including numbers, shapes, space and measurements, social and emotional competence including social skills in group settings, as well as fine motor skills including handwriting, cutting and pencil grip.
Specialist Program – additional needs teacher
Our policy is to integrate children with additional needs from the community into the pre-school and the wider community, which we find is advantageous for all the children at the pre-school. To accomplish this we have our very experienced additional needs teacher, who offers these children extra support and one on one time. This way these children can enjoy the benefits of social interaction within a normal pre-school environment and the rest of the group can learn how to be sensitive and caring to others in our community.
Shows and Outings
Shows and excursions are an important part of pre-school program. We aim to provide the children with two shows per year and depending on the interest of the group a group outing as well.
